Saxons down D’Youville, 5-2
ALFRED, NY- The Alfred University men’s soccer team knocked off D’Youville in a 5-2 decision, Wednesday evening at Merrill Field.
Junior midfielder Jeffery Thomas (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) started scoring for the Saxons when he found the net off a cross from senior defender Rigel Johnson (Little Valley, NY/Cattaraugus-Little Valley) in the 15th minute. Senior forward Frankie Mannino (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) would then bury a shot after beating a defender in the 25th minute. The last Saxon goal of the half (36th minute) would come off a corner kick put into the box by senior midfielder Tony Gai (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) when sophomore midfielder Eric Deemer (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) let a shot go and junior defender Uriah Kashmann-Myrow (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) was there to direct the ball past the keeper into the net. AU would go into intermission ahead 3-1, with a 7-6 shot advantage.
In the second half, Thomas paced the Saxons with another goal in the 47th minute off a cross from Gai. Mannino would round out scoring for Alfred with a chip over the keeper (80th minute); assisted by senior forward Eric Rockwood (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone). For the game, AU held a 15 to nine shot advantage over D’Youville.
Junior goalie Jacob Bird (Auburn, NY/Skaneateles) made four saves in 66 minutes of play before freshman goalie Matthew Unick (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) would take over to finish out the contest.
Alfred (5-12-0, 0-6-0 Empire 8) wraps up the season against Nazareth, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m.
