AU volleyball team splits pair on first day of Houghton Tournament
HOUGHTON, NY – The Alfred University volleyball team split a pair of matches Friday on the first day of the Houghton College Invitational Tournament. AU lost to Brockport, 3-0, before rebounding to defeat Maine-Presque Isle in three sets.
In the win over Maine-Presque Isle, Alfred (2-22) won by scores of 25-12, 25-10, 25-15. The Saxons were led by junior Paige Jensen (Weiser, ID/Weiser) with eight kills and junior Janelle Gallipeau (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) with 18 assists and five service aces.
Junior Chelsea Hall (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) had seven kills; junior Samantha Wood (Newfield, NY/Newfield) had six kills and two blocks; junior Brittany Anselment (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) had 11 digs; and junior Tara Barone (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) had five assists and five service aces.
Alfred lost to Brockport 25-22, 25-17, 25-23. Hall had seven kills and nine digs; junior Kellie Hughson (Albion, NY/Charles D’Amico) had 16 digs; Jensen had four kills and eight digs; junior Kelsey Brand (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) and Wood had five and four kills, respectively; Barone and Gallipeau had 13 and 11 assists, respectively.
Alfred wraps up its season Saturday with two matches on the tournament’s second day: at 10 a.m. against St. Lawrence and 2 p.m. against Wells.
