AU volleyball team wraps up season with split at Houghton Tournament

HOUGHTON, NY – The Alfred University volleyball team concluded its 2012 season with a pair of matches on the second day of the Houghton College Invitational Tournament Saturday. The Saxons lost to St. Lawrence, 3-0, then came back to defeat Wells in five sets.


Against Wells, AU won by scores of 25-20, 22-25, 25-17, 15-25, and 15-9. Junior Chelsea Hall (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) paced AU with 15 kills and 20 digs. Junior Paige Jensen (Weiser, ID/Weiser) had 13 kills and 10 digs; juniors Janelle Gallipeau (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) and Tara Barone (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) had 20 and 15 assists, respectively; junior Kelsey Brand (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) had nine kills; junior Samantha Wood (Newfield, NY/Newfield) had seven kills; and senior Jennifer Miranda (Bronx, NY/Academy of Letters) had 26 digs.


AU lost to St. Lawrence 25-22, 25-6, 25-18. Hall had six kills and eight digs to lead Alfred. Sophomore Taylor Kiernan (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) had 27 digs; sophomore Laura Brennan (Mansfield, PA/Mansfield) had four kills; Barone had nine digs; and Gallipeau finished with 10 assists.


Hall was named to the all-tournament team for Alfred, which finishes its season with a 3-23 record.
