Partridge shines as AU Western equestrian team sweeps pair at AU

ALFRED, NY — Alfred University junior Derek Partridge (Groveland, NY/Geneseo) earned top rider honors in both shows during a weekend sweep by the Saxons’ Western equestrian team Nov. 17 at the AU Equestrian Center.

 

Partridge took first place in open reining in both the morning and afternoon shows en route to being named the high point rider each time. The Saxons placed first of five teams competing in each show, marking the second time in two dates this season (the other was Oct. 20, also at AU) that AU has swept a pair of shows. Through four shows, Partridge in unbeaten in open reining and is in first place in the American Quarter Horse Association High Point Rider standings. The leader in the AQHA standings at the end of the regular season automatically qualifies to compete in the Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (IHSA) national championships.

 

AU senior Kristin Eklin (Bovey, MNB/Grand Rapids) was named reserve high point rider after taking first in open horsemanship in each show.

 

Other AU riders earning first-place blue ribbons during the morning show were: sophomore Casey Duncan (Stuarts Draft, VA/Stuarts Draft), in advanced horsemanship; junior Rebecca Graudons (Mayfield, NY/Mayfield) and sophomore Danielle Strange (Wellsboro, NY/Wellsboro), each first in a split event in intermediate horsemanship; and junior Nicole Mekker (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse), in beginner horsemanship.

 

AU sophomore Lexi Buckheit (Mansfield, PA/Mansfield) placed second in open reining; junior Kaitlin Maciejewski (Portlandville, NY/Laurens) was second in novice horsemanship; and freshman Ashley Mallery (Olean, NY/Olean) was second in intermediate horsemanship.

 

Event winners for AU in the afternoon show were: freshman Stephanie Zimicki (Lockport, NY/St. Mary’s), in novice horsemanship; freshman Shannon Dalton (Hamburg, NY/Frontier), in beginner horsemanship; and sophomore Ben Proctor (Lowman, NY/Elmira Free Academy), in intermediate horsemanship.

 

AU senior Brianna Cappiello (Webster, NY/East Rochester) was second in novice horsemanship; and sophomore Kelly Jo Stein (Scottsville, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) and freshman Caitlin Hughes (North Chittenden, VT/Proctor) were each second in intermediate horsemanship (split event).

 

The Saxon Western team is in action against for two shows at the AU Equestrian Center on Saturday, Dec. 1.
