Saxons pull away in second half, rout Caz
ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men’s basketball team used solid shooting and defense in the second half to break open a tight game and run away from visiting Cazenovia, 72-53, Saturday afternoon at the McLane Center.
The contest was tied, 27-27, at the half as both teams struggled from the floor, with AU shooting 27 percent and Cazenovia 36 percent in the first period. AU (2-4) shot 47 percent after intermission while holding Cazenovia to 27 percent shooting as the Saxons outscored the Wildcats 45-26 in the second half.
Senior guard Tim Costello (Windsor, NY/Windsor) led four AU players in double figures with 13 points, four assists and three steals. His three free throws with no time left on the first-half clock pulled Alfred even at intermission.
Junior forward Thomas Tsatsis (Neponsit, NY/Townsend Harris) had 12 points; sophomore center Dalton Walsh (Stockton, NY/Cassadaga Valley) had 11 points and seven rebounds; senior guard Sean Curran (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) netted 10 points; and senior forward Brett Dennis (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) had six points to go with a game-high nine rebounds.
Meech Drayton led Cazenovia (2-4) with a game-high 20 points, six rebounds and three assists, while Daniel Cunningham added 12 points.
AU is in action next on Tuesday, Dec. 4, at 8 p.m. when the Saxons open their Empire 8 Conference slate at St. John Fisher.
