Saxons solid in second day of Ithaca Invitational

ITHACA, NY – Several members of the Alfred University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams scored in individual events Saturday during the second day of action at the Ithaca College Invitational.


The AU men have 238.5 points and are in 11th place in the team standings, while the Saxon women are in 10th place with 236 points; Cornell’s men’s and women’s teams each lead the first day’s standings. AU is among 11 teams competing at the three-day invitational meet, which began Friday and concludes today.


Freshman Carly Watson (Hyde Park, NY/FDR) led the Alfred women, scoring in three individual events; top 24 finishers in each event score points for their team. She was eighth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:16.64); 10th in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.01); and 17th in the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.01).


Other AU women to score were: junior Cassandra Brown (Canisteo, NY/Canisteo-Greenwood), 12th in 1-meter diving (344.85 points); sophomore Christina Behr (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional), 16th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.51); and senior Katie Ganley (Syracuse, NY/Westhill), 22nd in the 200 fly (2:26.83).


The team of Behr, senior Tracy Miller (Auburn, NY/Auburn), Watson and freshman Kelsey McRill (Solon, OH/Solon) were ninth in the 200 free relay; Behr, freshman Katherine Fitz (New Holland, PA/Garden Spot), Watson and McRill were 11th in the 400 medley relay (4:19.73); and Watson, senior Shelby Remington (Pike, NY/Letchworth), McRill and Behr were 11th in the 800 free relay (8:32.89).


Sophomore Zac Toth (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) scored in two races to pace the Alfred men. He was 15th in the 400-yard individual medley (4:25.24) and 18th in the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.43).


Other Saxon swimmers scoring individually were: senior Brett Irwin (Springwater, NY/Wayland-Cohocton), 18th in the 100 fly (54.93 seconds); and senior Nate Chapman (Hornell, NY/Hornell), 14th (1:47.31), sophomore David Coombes (Dansville, NY/Dansville), 15th (1:47.57) and junior Peter Sowinski (Akron, NY/Akron), 20th (1:48.67), respectively, in the 200 free.


Sophomore David Luke (Ocala, FL/West Port), Toth, Coombes and Sowinski were fifth in the 200 free relay (1:27.07); Coombes, Toth Irwin and Sowinski were 10th in the 400 medley relay (3:45.13); and Toth, Coombes, Sowinski and Chapman were sixth in the 800 free relay (7:09.38).


Sunday’s final day of action begins at 10 a.m. and includes the 1,650-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 200-yard breaststroke, and 400-yard free relay.
