AU men’s basketball team whips SUNY Canton
ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men’s basketball team used hot shooting and strong rebounding to throttle visiting SUNY Canton, 89-70, Tuesday afternoon at the McLane Center.
The Saxons (4-11) shot 56 percent from the floor in the first half and took a 48-35 lead at intermission. Canton (5-10) shot 53 percent in the second half, but the Saxons were even better, making 58 percent of their shot to outscore the visitors, 41-35, in the second frame.
For the game, AU shot 57 percent, including a scorching 10-of-19 (53 percent) on three-point shots while making 75 percent (15 of 20) of its free throws. Senior guard Sean Curran (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) scored a 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting (5-of-9 on three-pointers) with five rebounds and junior guard Thomas Tsatsis (Neponsit, NY/Townsend Harris) had 17 points and six steals to lead the Saxons. Junior center Steve Lothridge (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) had 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting to go with a game-high eight boards as AU outrebounded the Kangaroos, 34-23.
Khalid Vaughn scored a game-best 23 points for Canton and Michbael Pulci and Xzavier Fisher added 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the Kangaroos.
Alfred is in action next on Saturday, Jan. 18, at 4 p.m. at home against Ithaca.
