Five Saxons, men’s 800 free relay advance to finals at UNYSCSA championships
2/22/13

ITHACA, NY – Five members of the Alfred University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams advanced from this morning’s preliminaries and will compete in tonight’s finals at the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association (UNYSCSA) championships.

Two AU women’s swimmers – freshman Carly Watson (Hyde Park, NY/FDR) and sophomore Chrissy Behr (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) – set new school records en route to finishing in the top eight of their races and will compete in tonight’s championship finals.

The four-day UNYSCSA meet began Wednesday, Feb. 20, and runs through Saturday, Feb. 23, at Ithaca College. Preliminary heats were held today in the men’s and women’s 200-yard butterfly, 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard breaststroke, and 800-yard freestyle relay. Finals in women’s 1-meter diving are also scheduled for this evening.

Watson swam to a sixth-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly; her time of 2:13.86 broke the school record of 2:15.98 she set in a dual meet with Hartwick last month. It has been a record-setting week for Watson, who on Thursday set new school marks in the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard freestyle. She and Behr also swam on teams that set new AU records in the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays this week.

Behr also qualified for tonight’s championship finals by placing eighth in the preliminaries in the 100-yard backstroke. Her time of 59.49 seconds shattered the school record of 1:01.38 set in 203 by Melissa McAllister.

The top 24 finishers in each event advance to three rounds of evening finals and secure points for their teams. The top eight in preliminaries compete in the championship “A” finals; places ninth through 16th compete in the “B” consolation finals; and places 17th to 24th compete in the “C” consolation finals.

Three members of the AU men’s team advanced to tonight’s finals in individual events. Sophomore Zac Toth (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) and freshman Dustin Whyte (Wrentham, MA/King Philip Regional) were 12th (1:56.73) and 22nd (2:01.16), respectively, in the 200-yard butterfly. Sophomore David Coombes (Dansville, NY/Dansville) was 15th in the 100-yard backstroke (54.10).

The men’s 800-yard freestyle "B" team of freshman Sheldon Vosburgh (Canajoharie, NY/Canajoharie), Whyte, senior Brett Irwin (Springwater, NY/Wayland-Cohocton), and sophomore Joseph Rogers (Dublin, NH) qualified sixth in 7:25.37.

The "A" teams for the AU men and women will also swim in tonight's 800-yard free relay. Schools' "A" teams for the 800 free relay  do not swim in preliminaries, but automatically advance to the evening finals.
