AU softball team splits with Elmira
4/15/13

ELMIRA, NY — The Alfred University softball team split an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader at Elmira College Monday afternoon, winning the opener, 1-0, then dropping the nightcap by the same score.

In the opener, Alfred sophomore pitcher Jessica O’Sullivan (Habersham, SC/Groton-Dunstable Regional) outdueled Elmira ace Alex Puglosi. O’Sullivan scattered six hits while striking out six and walking one to improve to 8-1 on the season.

Alfred sophomore Alison Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda) was the hard-luck loser in the second game, allowing a run on just one hit. She struck out two and walked two to fall to 2-5 on the year. Puglosi tossed a no-hitter, giving up two walks to improve to 9-4

With the split, AU is 15-11 overall and 7-3 in Empire 8 play; Elmira is 13-7 and 5-3 in conference play.

In the opener, the game was scoreless until the top of the fourth, when AU freshman catcher Jasmine Picini (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) reached on a fielder’s choice, advanced to second with two outs and scored on a single by freshman shortstop Nicole Maher (Newark, DE/Caravel Academy).

Freshman Mackenzie Miller (Newport, OR/Newport) and senior first baseman Hana Gross (Union, NJ/Union) also had base hits for the Saxons.

Elmira scored the lone run of the second game in the third inning. The Soaring Eagles’ leadoff hitter walked, advanced two bases on consecutive wild pitches, and scored on an error on a ball hit to first base.

Alfred runners reached base four times in the game: twice on walks, once on a hit batter, and one on an error. The Saxons’ best chance to score came when junior outfielder Stephanie Arguello (Placentia, CA/Vista del Lago) reached second base on an error leading off the sixth. After a strikeout, Arguello advanced to third on a groundout, but Puglosi struck out the next hitter to strand her there.

Alfred is in action next on Wednesday, April 17, for a non-league doubleheader at Pitt-Bradford, beginning at 3 p.m. The Saxons play their home finale Friday, April 19, a non-conference doubleheader against Houghton, before wrapping up Empire 8 play with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at St. John Fisher on Saturday, April 20.
