AU Western equestrian team sweeps weekend show to open season

ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University Western equestrian team opened its 2013-14 season hosting a pair of shows Saturday, Sept. 29, at the AU Equestrian Center. AU finished first among five teams competing in the morning and afternoon shows.

In the morning show, AU took first, followed by Alfred State. Other teams competing were Cornell, RIT and Brockport. AU junior Lexi Buckheit (Mansfield, PA/Mansfield) earned high-point rider honors after taking first in both reining and open horsemanship. Seniors Derek Partridge (Groveland, NY/Geneseo) and Ashley Sinclair (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) shared reserve high-point rider honors, with Sinclair finishing second in reining.

Other riders earning first place ribbons for AU in the first show were: sophomore Stephanie Zimicki (Lockport, NY/St. Mary’s), in novice horsemanship; freshman Jessica Pierce (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville), in intermediate horsemanship II; sophomore Shannon Dalton (Hamburg, NY/Frontier), in beginner horsemanship.

Other top riders for AU were: freshman Gabrielle Covert (Perry, NY/Perry), second in novice horsemanship (Section A); senior Megan Burke (Montrose, NY/Hendrick Hudson), second in novice horsemanship (Section B); freshman Morgan Ivey (Bradenton, FL/Ohio Connections Academy), second in intermediate horsemanship II (Section A); sophomore Caitlin Hughes (North Chittenden, VT/Proctor), second on intermediate horsemanship II (Section B);  junior Nicole Lobur (Akron, NY/Akron), second in intermediate horsemanship II (Section C); Kaysey Hinkle (Camden, Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland), second in beginner horsemanship.

Alfred outdistanced second-place RIT to take top team honors in the afternoon show. Buckheit again earned high-point rider honors after taking first place in reining. Partridge, who was second in reining, was named reserve high-point rider.

Other first-place performers for AU in the second show were: senior Kaitlin Maciejewski (Portlandville, NY/Laurens), in novice horsemanship (Section A); junior Danielle Strange (Wellsboro, NY/Wellsboro), in novice horsemanship (Section B); senior Rebecca Graudons (Mayfield, NY/Mayfield), in intermediate horsemanship II (Section A); Hughes, in intermediate horsemanship II (Section B); Lobur, in intermediate horsemanship II (Section C); senior Nicole Mekker (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse), in intermediate horsemanship I; and Dalton, in beginner horsemanship.

Junior Kelly Jo Stein (Scottsville, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) was second in intermediate horsemanship II (Section A); Pierce was second in in intermediate horsemanship II (Section B); senior Caralee Cecala (Springville, NY/Springville) was second in in intermediate horsemanship II (Section C); and Mistark was second in beginner horsemanship.

The AU Western team is in action against for two shows at the AU Equestrian Center on Sunday, Oct. 20.
