University a top educator of teachers
1/22/14

Alfred University has been recognized as a top college for teacher education by the Online College Database’s new ranking, “Top Colleges in New York Shaping the Next Generation.” The list honors the post-secondary institutions in the state that graduated the most education and teaching professionals in 2012.

“Many colleges and universities have tremendous teacher education programs,” said Doug Jones, founder of The Online College Database. “But which ones are producing the youngest educators today? We wanted to identify the colleges making the largest impact on our students.”

To rank among the College Database’s top educational colleges, an institution must be fully accredited, be a four-year, U.S., not-for-profit college, and have a minimum of 10 graduates from education or teaching programs in 2012.

“We are leaders in our region in preparing teachers who know and understand the demands of contemporary education, and demonstrate this excellence in the classroom, on rigorous teacher examinations, and in securing jobs in New York, across the United States, and around the world,” said Nancy Evangelista, dean of the College of Professional Studies and associate provost at Alfred University. “We graduate students who hold expertise in early childhood education, literacy teaching, and teaching of languages, humanities, and social sciences to middle and high school students.

“The partnership between the Division of Education and the internationally renowned School of Art and Design at Alfred University means that graduates of our art education program have cutting edge studio skills, as well as proven abilities to translate their love of art into exciting experiences that will excite the imaginations of future generations of artists,” noted Evangelista.  “New partnerships with science, math, and engineering faculty have created interdisciplinary courses that integrate science and math concepts, allowing our graduates to be leaders in educating students in the STEM fields,” she added.

The College Database is a not-for-profit organization whose goal is to provide free information about education options both nationally and locally to students, parents, and other interested parties. The goal is accomplished by making all information and tools on the site free and easy to access. While still a relatively young company, the College Database has become a leader in providing educational information to libraries, high schools, and career centers across the country.
