Career center director, graduate student will receive state awards for their work

Alfred University (AU) Career Development Center (CDC) Director Mark McFadden and graduate student Renee Duquette have both received awards from the New York State Career Development Association for 2014.

McFadden was named winner of an Outstanding Career Practitioner Award which recognizes career development professionals for outstanding work in their daily career services delivery. The award takes into consideration years of direct service; service quality as indicated by innovative programming, local recognition, and publications; and service to the profession as indicated by participation and leadership in professional associations.

As director of the CDC, McFadden serves as a liaison to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, manages all career counseling training, the Graduate School Fair, CDC workshops, and Teacher Recruitment Day.

McFadden earned a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown and a master of professional studies in community service administration from AU. Prior to joining the University in 2001, he worked for the Allegany County Department of Social Services. While McFadden is always busy, he says, “Working with a professional, dedicated staff and talented students who turn into amazing alums makes my job so enjoyable that I have trouble knowing when to stop.”

Duquette received the Graduate Student Research/Service Award from the state Career Development Association. This honor recognizes graduate students who positively contribute to the field of career development through research, publication, and service to the community. It is presented with a $200 cash prize.

Duquette is a first-year graduate student in mental health counseling. A graduate of Churchville-Chili High School, she is the daughter of David and Kimberly Duquette of Churchville.

Both awards will be presented at the 2014 NYS Career Development Association Conference in Buffalo, May 29-30.

The NYS Career Development Association is an organization dedicated to the promotion of the career services and development profession.
