American Ceramic Society selects alumnus/professor as Fellow

Dr. Scott T. Misture, Inamori Professor of Materials Science and Engineering in the Kazuo Inamori School of Engineering at Alfred University (AU), has been named a Fellow of The American Ceramic Society (ACerS).

Fellows are selected by the ACerS Board of Directors for outstanding contributions to the ceramic arts or sciences; through broad and productive scholarship in ceramic science and technology; by conspicuous achievement in ceramic industry; or by outstanding service to the Society. Fellows must have reached their 35th birthday and been members of the Society at least five years continuously at the time of their nomination.

The author or co-author of some 140 publications, Misture has given more than 340 presentations at professional meetings, including some 30 invited talks at international assemblies. He has served as a session organizer for several international meetings and chaired more than 25 sessions at international conferences. 

His primary interests center on structure characterization of oxides, especially in-situ measurements using synchrotron radiation, neutrons, and laboratory x-ray sources. Misture’s current research includes study of oxide nanosheets for photocatalytic and electrochemical applications and solid oxide fuel cell catalysts.  Most recently, he has been engaged in understanding self-assembly of nanosheets and characterizing their interfaces with gas and liquid environments. 

Misture is a Fellow of the International Centre for Diffraction Data, as well as the current chairman of its board of directors and a contributing editor to the Powder Diffraction File. He is a member of the Denver X-Ray Conference Organizing Committee and conducts full-day workshops on in-situ diffraction and diffraction optics. He has also served as an ex-officio member of the U.S. National Committee for Crystallography of the National Academy of Sciences since 2008. 

Misture serves the materials science community as a principal editor of the Journal of Materials Research and recently chaired the Basic Science Division of The American Ceramic Society as well as its Membership Committee.

An AU alumnus, Misture earned a bachelor of science degree in ceramic engineering in 1990 and a Ph.D. in ceramic science in 1994. He was a post-doctoral research fellow at Siemens Corporate Research in Munich, Germany and at the High Temperature Materials Laboratory at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Roane County, Tennessee, before returning to Alfred University in 1996.

Misture was named AU’s first Inamori Professor in 2008. A $10 million gift from the Kyocera Corp. in honor of its founder, Dr. Kazuo Inamori, led to the creation of four Inamori Professorships in the School of Engineering.

The American Ceramic Society is comprised of more than 9,500 scientists, engineers, researchers, manufacturers, plant personnel, educators, students, and marketing and sales professionals from more than 70 countries. The Society provides members and subscribers access to extensive periodicals and books, meetings and expositions, and online technical information. The Society educates and provides forums to connect individuals working in ceramics-related materials through hosted technical meetings and communities in order to better advance the ceramics community.
