More than 80 recruits set to join football team

The Alfred University football team will welcome 86 recruits when preseason camp opens in mid-August. Among the new players are six high school all-state selections, including five from New York State.

Among the new recruits are five New York State all-stars: Sammy Davis Jr., a tailback from Union-Endicott High School; Tyler Brion, a linebacker from Wellsville High School; Matt Perry, a running back from Attica High School; and a pair of Buffalo-area stars: Alexander Licata, a linebacker from Frontier High School (Hamburg, NY), and Jared Watkins, a defensive back from Cleveland Hill High School (Cheektowaga, NY).

Liam Hobbins, a junior strong safety transferring to AU from Division II Assumption College, is a former Maine state all-star.

Other key recruits include: Willie McFadden, a tailback from Copiague (NY) High School; Chad Pledger, a wide receiver from Central Square (NY) High School; Matt Perry, a tailback from Attica (NY) High School; Anthony Penn, a defensive lineman from Elmira (NY) Free Academy; Tadriek Johnson, a wide receiver/defensive back from Amherst (NY) High School; and Marc Lambert, an offensive/defensive lineman from Queensbury (NY) High School.

Davis Jr. (5-10, 180) was a Fourth Team New York State Class A all-star at Union-Endicott High School, near Binghamton, in 2013. Brion (5-10, 190) was a two-time New York State Class C all-star at Wellsville High School, earning Second Team honors in 2013 and Third Team honors in 2012. Perry (6-1, 195) was an honorable mention New York State Class C all-star last fall. Licata (6-1, 200) was a Fifth Team New York State Class AA all-star as an outside linebacker at Frontier High School as a senior last year. Watkins (6-0, 150) was a First Team Class C all-star defensive back at Cleveland Hill High School in 2013.

Hobbins (5-10, 190) was a First Team Class A Maine state all-star in 2010 at Cheverus High School. He was a member of the football team at Assumption College (Worcester, MA) for two seasons (2011, 2012), appearing in six games in 2012 and tallying eight tackles. He did not play in 2013 before transferring to AU.

McFadden (5-9, 190) was a Suffolk County all-star as a senior at Copiague High School. Pledger (6-2, 180) was an all-league wide receiver and defensive back at Central Square High School. Penn (5-11, 265) was selected to play in the Ernie Davis All-Star game as a defensive lineman in 2013. Johnson (6-0, 175) was a First Team all-league wide receiver at Amherst High School last fall. Lambert (6-0, 290) was a Section II all-star as a senior offensive lineman at Queensbury High in 2013.

Other top recruits to the Saxons include:

  • Steven Kadnar (6-4, 170), wide receiver, Our Lady of Lourdes High School, Poughkeepsie, NY. Kadnar was a Section I all-star as a senior in 2013.
  • Chris Szlamczynski (5-11, 250), offensive lineman from East Syracuse-Minoa High School, Syracuse, NY. Szlamczynski was a First Team All-Central New York all-star last fall.
  • Eric Brennan (6-6, 265), fullback from Greene (NY) High School. He was a First Team Section IV all-star last season.
  • Cameron Coon (5-10, 175), running back from Frontier High School. He was a First Team All-Metro (Buffalo area) selection last fall.
  • Mike Caddigan (5-10, 210), linebacker from Holy Trinity in Hicksville, NY (Section VIII, Nassau County). He was a two-time Catholic High School Football League all-star at Holy Trinity (2012, 2013).
  • Nick Soriano (6-2, 165), wide receiver from Lindenhurst (NY) High School. He was a Suffolk County all-star as a senior in 2013.
  • Irving Frankie (5-10, 160), running back from St. Francis Prep in New York City. He was a Catholic High School Football League all-star and All-City honoree as a senior last fall.
  • Tyler Moyle (5-9, 180), strong safety from Muncy (PA) High School. He was a First Team Heartland Conference all-star as a senior in 2013.
