Saxon swimming duo earns spring academic All-American accolades
Peter Sowinski (Akron, NY/Akron) and Joseph Rogers (Dublin, NH), members of the 2013-14 men’s swimming and diving team at Alfred University, have been named academic All-Americans.
Sowinski, who graduated from AU in May, and Rogers, who will be a senior for the Saxons next season, were named honorable mention Scholar All-Americans by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). They were honored for the spring 2014 semester.
CSCAA Scholar All-Americans earn honors based on their performance both in the pool and in the classroom. First Team Scholar All-Americans must have a GPA of 3.50 or higher and qualify automatically to participate in the NCAA championship meet. Honorable mention selections must have a GPA of at least 3.50 and earn provisional “B” NCAA qualifying times.
Sowinski and Rogers each earned “B” qualifying cut times as part of the Saxons’ 800-yard freestyle relay team, which set a new school record of 6:47.09 at the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association (UNYSCSA)/Empire 8 Conference championships Feb. 20. Sowinski was also a member of the 400-yard free relay team that set a school record of 3:04.43 while making a “B” cut Feb. 21 at the UNYSCSA/E8 meet.
