We are proud
of our Student Affairs programs, many of which have won
regional – or even national – awards.
Career Services:
The Robert R. McComsey Career Development Center won the
Philip J. Brockway Award for Innovation from the Easter
Association of Colleges and Employers (EACE). The EACE
is comprised of colleges and employers from northern North
Carolina to Maine and from the Atlantic Ocean to eastern
Ohio.
Athletics:
A pair of AU men’s lacrosse players wrapped up spectacular
careers last spring. David Vail finished his career second
on the AU career lists for points and assists and earned
All-America honors. Dylan Macro finished his career as
the school’s all-time leader in goals. Midfielder Andy
German was named the Empire 8 Conference Rookie of the
Year.
The football team went 8-3 in 2004, ending its season
with a 36-17 victory over Norwich in the ECAC Northeast
Championship game. Fifteen Saxons earned All-Empire 8 recognition,
including linebacker Brenton Brady, who was named conference
Player of the Year. Brady was also named ECAC Northwest
Region Player of the Year and was an honorable mention
All-American. Sophomore tailback Chaz Bruce set new AU
single-season and single-game rushing records.
The 2004 women’s tennis team turned in the best season
the school history, going undefeated at 12-0 and winning
Alfred University’s first-ever Empire 8 Conference championship.
Senior Alicia Ballard repeated as Empire 8 Player of the
Year and two other Saxons — sophomore Jodi Butterfoss and
freshman Katie Calfee — were named First Team conference
all-stars. Calfee also earned Empire 8 Rookie of the Year
honors, while head coach Brian Friedland was named conference
Coach of the Year.
The men’s soccer team enjoyed another successful season
in 2004, going 10-6-2. The Saxons qualified for the postseason
for a second straight year, playing in both the Empire
8 Conference tournament and the ECAC Upstate championships.
Student Activities:
AU’s Cultural Café was recognized as the best multicultural
program in the nation by the National Association of Campus
Activities.
Student Activities Director Dan Napolitano was named Outstanding
Professional in the Field by the National Association of
Campus Activities-East Coast Region (Pennsylvania, New
York, Delaware, New Jersey—approximately 240 colleges and
universities).
“The Alfies”—AU’s student life version of the Academy
Awards—was named Best Social Program in the East Coast
Region by the National Association of Campus Activities.
Special Programs:
AU’s Alcohol and Other Drug program has been ranked among
the top 20 in the nation.
Dining Services:
AU Dining Services was awarded 3rd place in the nation
by the National Association of Colleges and Universities
Food Services for its menu in Ade and Powell Dining Halls
(Small Colleges and Universities Division). |
