Award-winning student life programs and activities

We are proud of our Student Affairs programs, many of which have won regional – or even national – awards.

Career Services:

The Robert R. McComsey Career Development Center won the Philip J. Brockway Award for Innovation from the Easter Association of Colleges and Employers (EACE). The EACE is comprised of colleges and employers from northern North Carolina to Maine and from the Atlantic Ocean to eastern Ohio.

Athletics:

A pair of AU men’s lacrosse players wrapped up spectacular careers last spring. David Vail finished his career second on the AU career lists for points and assists and earned All-America honors. Dylan Macro finished his career as the school’s all-time leader in goals. Midfielder Andy German was named the Empire 8 Conference Rookie of the Year.

The football team went 8-3 in 2004, ending its season with a 36-17 victory over Norwich in the ECAC Northeast Championship game. Fifteen Saxons earned All-Empire 8 recognition, including linebacker Brenton Brady, who was named conference Player of the Year. Brady was also named ECAC Northwest Region Player of the Year and was an honorable mention All-American. Sophomore tailback Chaz Bruce set new AU single-season and single-game rushing records.

The 2004 women’s tennis team turned in the best season the school history, going undefeated at 12-0 and winning Alfred University’s first-ever Empire 8 Conference championship. Senior Alicia Ballard repeated as Empire 8 Player of the Year and two other Saxons — sophomore Jodi Butterfoss and freshman Katie Calfee — were named First Team conference all-stars. Calfee also earned Empire 8 Rookie of the Year honors, while head coach Brian Friedland was named conference Coach of the Year.

The men’s soccer team enjoyed another successful season in 2004, going 10-6-2. The Saxons qualified for the postseason for a second straight year, playing in both the Empire 8 Conference tournament and the ECAC Upstate championships.

Student Activities:

AU’s Cultural Café was recognized as the best multicultural program in the nation by the National Association of Campus Activities.

Student Activities Director Dan Napolitano was named Outstanding Professional in the Field by the National Association of Campus Activities-East Coast Region (Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware, New Jersey—approximately 240 colleges and universities).

“The Alfies”—AU’s student life version of the Academy Awards—was named Best Social Program in the East Coast Region by the National Association of Campus Activities.

Special Programs:

AU’s Alcohol and Other Drug program has been ranked among the top 20 in the nation.

Dining Services:

AU Dining Services was awarded 3rd place in the nation by the National Association of Colleges and Universities Food Services for its menu in Ade and Powell Dining Halls (Small Colleges and Universities Division).
