Kathy Woughter, Vice President for Student AffairsVice President of Student Affairs : Kathy Woughter
Email

Background
Hailing from the town of Niagara Falls, Kathy holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and secondary education from Geneseo and a master’s in counselor education from Alfred University. She’s worked in student affairs for her entire professional career as a residence hall director, swim coach, career counselor, and most recently director of the CDC. She’s also a WALF DJ, professionally active in a number of organizations, and on most days would rather be outside biking, hiking, or kayaking than doing just about anything else. She has been at the University since 1995.

Contact Kathy if

  • You need a friendly starting point to have a question answered, and you don’t know where else to begin
  • You have a concern with any student affairs department that you wish to discuss
  • You want an internship in the Student Affairs administration office
  • You have a great idea and want to talk about the opportunities and barriers, or if you want to figure out how to get your voice and ideas heard by others on campus

Why it’s great to be the VP of Student Affairs
“I get to contribute to big decisions that improve the lives of students and to keep them healthy and safe so that they can get the best possible education at Alfred University. A typical day might include a meeting with a student who has an idea that she needs to figure out how to fund, lunch with an intern, a Student Senate meeting, and a brainstorming session on what a new residence hall might look like. My main job on campus is to advocate for students on a broad scale, and that makes for a pretty satisfying day. “

Words of wisdom
“As you enter college, don’t expect that you’re going to know exactly what you want to be when you grow up. For that matter, don’t expect you’ll have the answer by the time you graduate either. If you’re too focused and worried about your career path, you may miss some wonderful opportunities that occur at the edge of your peripheral vision.”

Background
I am a native of Syracuse, but I’ve lived in a lot of different places and was working as a counseling psychologist at a state school in Virginia before relocating to Alfred in 1991. When our children were about ready to start kindergarten, we looked for a small college town to raise our kids. We couldn't find a smaller one than Alfred! So far it’s been a great decision. Prior to becoming the Dean of Student in 2006, I was the director of the Counseling and Wellness Center.
