Originally from Niagara Falls, NY, Kathy holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and secondary education from Geneseo and a master’s in counselor education from Alfred University. She’s worked in student affairs for her entire professional career, including jobs as a residence hall director, swim coach, career counselor, and Director of AU's Career Development Center. She's the Region II Director for NASPA (Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education) and she serves on the Jones Memorial Hospital Board. Why it's great to be the VP of Student Affairs
I get to contribute to big decisions that improve the lives of students so that they can get the best possible education at Alfred University. A typical day might include a meeting with a student who has an idea that she needs to figure out how to fund, lunch with an intern or mentee, a brainstorming session on how we can make our campus center even more welcoming, and a Student Senate meeting. My main job on campus is to advocate for students on a broad scale, and that makes for a pretty satisfying day.

Here are some typical ways I assist students:
  • Supporting and empowering students and families in crisis and/or challenging situations
  • Referring students to resources to increase the likelihood of their success
  • Facilitating communications and connections with university personnel and departments
  • Assisting students who are considering withdrawing from the university.
  • Notifying faculty of extended absences from class. Notifications are sent as a convenience for the student; but do not excuse the student's absence. It is the responsibility of the student to contact each professor regarding the professor's policy for missed classes, assignments, etc.
  • If a student has been adversely affected by another member of the campus community and they want to know their options.
I am a native of Syracuse, but I’ve lived in a lot of different places and was working as a counseling psychologist at a state school in Virginia before relocating to Alfred. When our children were about ready to start kindergarten, we looked for a small college town to raise our kids. We couldn't find a smaller one than Alfred! Even though our kids are grown and moved away, we love Alfred and have made this community our home.

I love all things outdoors – from biking, hiking, golfing, photography and snowshoeing, to using the pizza oven on our patio.
