The Alfred University equestrian camps create a wonderful opportunity for all levels of riders from beginners through advanced. Campers can bring their own horses or use AU's lesson horses during their week of camp. They will be assigned a horse and during the week have the opportunity to ride and care for the horse as they refine their skills based on their own personal goals and direction.

All camps will be held at AU's Bromeley-Daggett Equestrian Center. This spacious equestrian center includes classrooms, viewing areas, a 200 x 80-foot indoor arena, 50 stalls and two outdoor arenas:200 x 100 and 80 x 100.

Residential English Camp
The Residential English Camp, July 18-22, for riders aged 14-17, accommodates hunt seat riding based on the gifts and needs of the participants.

  • Riders do flat work in the morning and ride over fences in the afternoon.
  • Students will define realistic personal goals at the beginning of the week and their lessons will be directed toward helping them achieve their goals.
  • A student show will be held at the end of the week to allow riders to demonstrate the skills they have learned.
  • Camp Fee: $795 (covers room and board from supper on Sunday through lunch on Thursday, instruction, supervision, program materials, evening recreational activities and either use of an Alfred University horse or boarding of the camper's own horse.)
  • Campers will arrive on Sunday and leave after lunch on Thursday.

Residential campers stay in University residence halls (2 per room). Students must provide their own pillows, blankets and bed/bath linens for the week (bed linens must fit the extra-long twin residence hall beds). All meals will be served in the campus dining hall. Each participant is responsible for transportation, incidentals and extra nights or meals. Further details and directions will be sent to all campers when they enroll. If, for any reason, a participant must be sent home early, all expenses will be paid by the student/parent.

Activities
Campers will spend most of their time at the Equestrian Center. When not in classes or riding, campers will enjoy planned recreational activities. Living, dining and learning together, campers have ample opportunity to get to know each other and develop lasting friendships. Sample activities include:

  • indoor and outdoor games
  • movies
  • visits to nearby Foster Lake for a cook-out and campfire
  • swimming
  • hay rides
  • social gatherings at the Terra Cotta Coffee House
  • farewell party on the last night

Supervision
When residential campers are not in instruction sessions, they are supervised by specially-trained Resident Directors (RDs) and Resident Assistants (RAs) who serve as camp counselors, positive role models, mentors and friends.

Campers who wish to enroll must return the completed enrollment form, along with a check in the amount of $795*, made payable to Alfred University. Campers will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. To ensure quality instruction and maximum participation, enrollment will be limited. The camp will fill up fast, so it is a good idea to enroll as early as possible. We will begin accepting enrollment forms January 4, 2010.

Campers who enroll will soon receive further information and additional materials including medical forms, liability releases, emergency notification forms, etc. These materials must be filled out as soon as possible and returned by June 30. Updated immunization information (including dates) is also required at that time. If you do not have updated immunization information on hand, you may want to acquire this from your physician now to avoid delays.

Financial Aid
Sorry, there are no scholarships or other forms of financial aid available for campers in any of our summer programs

Residential Camper Cancellation Policy
Refunds, minus a $100 administrative fee, will be made for residential camper cancellations received by July 2. 50% refunds will be made for cancellations received between July 3 and July 9. We cannot make refunds to students who cancel after July 9 because we must hire staff, purchase materials, arrange for meals and reserve athletic facilities and housing space long before the start of our summer programs. We base all of these arrangements on the number of students accepted into each camp or institute and cannot make changes after contracts are signed and commitments are made.

Day Camps
The Alfred University Equestrian Day Camps, which will be held July 5-9 and July 26-30, 2010, are open to riders of all levels, aged 8-16.

  • The day camps run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • English and western instruction is offered.
  • Campers are assigned a horse to ride during the week and are also involved with the hands-on care for that horse.
  • Each camper has 2 sessions of riding each day.
  • When campers are not involved in riding they will be busy with arts and crafts projects and other recreational activities as well as learning stable management skills.
  • A horse show will be held at the end of the day on Friday so campers can demonstrate for their parents the skills they learned during the week.
  • Each camper will be responsible for packing his/her own lunch. Refreshments and snacks will be provided. A kitchen area is available for use.
  • Campers may bring their own horses if desired.
  • Day Camp Fee: $375 per week
