Cultural Unity, Student Involvement and eSports
Brian Saltsman joined Alfred University in 2018 as Director of Student Diversity and Inclusion, drawn by what he calls a “wonderful opportunity” to work with students and a community eager to build on the University’s traditions of diversity, equality and inclusion.
Since arriving on campus, he has been immersed in his work with colleagues and students, many of whom he has gotten to know through the University’s Institute for Cultural Unity in addition to organized events and more casual activities, AU's video gaming eSports Club being just one example, “where we all congregate together during the week and on weekends around the campus.” Brian’s also been an instrumental force behind pushing students in the popular eSports club to coordinate and organize the club’s transition to a varsity sports team beginning fall semester 2020.
There are plenty of places around Alfred where acquaintances and friendships can evolve. When asked of his favorite spots on campus, Brian says, “In all honesty, it’s the Institute for Cultural Unity and the Center for Student Involvement in Powell Campus Center. So many students come into those spaces that there is always something going on and someone to talk to during the day and during events.”
Brian talks about his work at Alfred as more of an opportunity for self-improvement than professional success. “I am not successful because I have done great things,” he says. “I am bettered each day because we have all contributed to the success of our community and our effort to influence the world we are a part of in transformative ways both seen and unseen.”
