ROTC, Mechanical Engineering, 3 Minors AND Varsity Soccer

AU’s small class sizes and small town atmosphere made Makenzie Cashmer feel at home when she first toured the college. Her long-standing interest in mechanics directed her toward the mechanical engineering program, and she soon learned how much she could do with a degree in the field.

I know that all of my professors and my coaches are going to push me to be the best that I can be. All these challenges, physical and academic, are going to help me become an officer in the Army in two years.

Makenzie enjoyed studying chemistry immensely during her first semester and decided to add the minor. She also elected to minor in computer science, an interest that began in her high school programming classes. Makenzie recently chose a third minor, leadership, to help with her career in the Army.

Drawn to the discipline of the military lifestyle, she knew from a very young age that she was born to serve others. She seized the opportunity to join ROTC as an AU student, and although it is difficult to balance the program, academics, and varsity soccer practice, she is excited to see where her path leads.

Many of Makenzie’s professors ask about ROTC and have helped her love the topics she’s studying. “I can walk into all my professors’ offices and they will go out of their way to help me with whatever I need, academic or personal,” she says. “They are all willing to go the extra mile to make sure I understand what we are learning in class or just to talk after a stressful week.”

In addition to her other commitments, Makenzie is in the Honors programs, a chemistry teaching assistant, and treasurer of the Newman Club. After college, she hopes to secure a management role in a manufacturing company.
