Alfred University extends test-optional admissions policy

ALFRED, NY – Alfred University is extending a temporary test-optional policy for first-year students seeking admission through spring of 2024. Under the policy, high school students can apply for admission without submitting SAT or ACT test scores.

Citing challenges brought on by COVID-19, including the cancellation of SAT and ACT examinations, the University adopted the policy last April for students seeking admission in the fall of 2021. The extension of the test-optional policy applies to spring and fall 2022, spring and fall 2023, and spring 2024 applicants.

“As we all continue to navigate the ongoing challenges created by COVID-19, we especially recognize how it has impacted students across the United States and around the globe, not only in the classroom, but also access to admission testing,” Jonathan Kent, vice president for Enrollment Management, said of the University’s decision to extend the test-optional policy.

In making admission and scholarship decisions, Alfred University considers several factors in addition to standardized test scores. These include high school grades, rigor of coursework, personal essay, letters of recommendation, and a record of personal achievements. Under the test-optional policy, applicants who choose not to submit ACT or SAT scores will be evaluated on the other factors.

Alfred University will not give preference to a student who submits test scores, but should a student believe their score provides a good indication of their academic ability, the admission committee will consider that score along with the other factors.

The test-optional policy also applies to students applying for merit scholarships. Each applicant who decides to be test-optional will receive the same consideration for merit as someone who wants their test scores as part of their application.

At the end of the extended test-optional period, the University will make a determination on reinstating the required testing policy for students applying for admission for the fall 2024 semester. One of the reasons Alfred University has instituted the test-optional policy is to pilot a study over the three years to determine next steps.
