Art Professor Heidi Hahn’s paintings included in Vogue magazine COVID year retrospective

Paintings by Heidi Hahn, Assistant Professor of Painting at Alfred University’s School of Art and Design, are part of Vogue magazine’s series Life in Lockdown, a project “looking back at an extraordinary, challenging year—commemorating what we’ve lost, what we’ve gained, and finding the moments of hope,” according to Vogue.

Hahn’s paintings, on display at the Nathalie Karg Gallery in New York City, accompany the article The Year of Invisible Crisis: Three Women Losing-Or-Leaving-Their Jobs During the Pandemic, written by Michelle Ruiz. Two of the paintings depict groups of women; the third is of an individual woman. All three depict their subjects in Hahn’s flowing style of wavy lines and a soft but vivid palette.

Barry Schwabsky, art historian and critic, describes Hahn’s paintings as breaking new ground in directions explored by the modernist painter Henri Matisse. In addition, Schwabsky has praised Hahn’s technical virtuosity: “Her handling of color, line, luminosity, and so on comes across as somehow both instinctual and analytical: Chromatic washes condense into emotional atmospheres, while swift gestural drawing elicits, rather than imposes, definition. Hahn makes mood palpable.”

Hahn studied at Cooper Union, where she received her BFA in 2006. She received her MFA from Yale University in 2014. She has received numerous awards, residencies, and fellowships, including a Jerome Foundation Grant; a Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture Residency. She has exhibited nationally and internationally in numerous group and solo shows, including an exhibition at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art in 2018 and an exhibition at the Louisiana State University Museum of Art.
