Alfred University "Reunion Bikers" list initial participants for this year’s adventure
The Alfred University “reunion bikers,” a group of alumni who spend the week preceding Reunion Weekend bicycling to Alfred, announce initial participants and are actively recruiting additional alumni, students, and friends to join them for their return trip to campus this year.
The Alfred University “reunion bikers,” a group of alumni who spend the week preceding Reunion Weekend bicycling to Alfred, announce initial participants and are actively recruiting additional alumni, students, and friends to join them for their return trip to campus this year.
This year’s participants include veteran bikers Roberta (Birdy) Auerbach ’76, Mary Bouchard ‘73, David ’77 and Regina Holleb, Dave ’61 and Kate Perry, Larry ’68 and Denise ‘69 Ploetz, Jim Randall ‘77 and Carolyn Zimlich. The reunion bike ride has proven popular with returning alumni from the honored reunion classes particularly those returning for their 40th, 45th and 50th reunions. This year’s honored classes include not only the class years ending in 6 and 11 but also the years ending in 5 and 10 to make up for the lost Covid-19 reunion of 2020.
The group has chosen Ithaca, NY as their peddle-off point. Ithaca is known for its gorges and waterfalls, with more than 100 within 10 miles of the city. Located in the heart of the Finger Lakes at the south end of Cayuga Lake, Ithaca is the home of Cornell University and Ithaca College.
The bikers will be traveling Saturday, July 31, to the Ithaca area and spend three nights there before moving on to Mt. Morris, NY for two nights (August 3 and 4). While in Mt. Morris the cyclists will tackle the grueling Park Road in Letchworth State Park. A white water rafting trip is also planned along the Genesee River in the park gorge. The reunion bikers move on to the Hornell Best Western Thursday night, August 5. On Friday morning, August 6 the group will celebrate with their “Victory Ride” into Alfred with an anticipated arrival at the King Alfred Statue at noon.
The group welcome students, alumni and friends to join them as we ride through your local area, or for part or all of our trip. We also enjoy having lunch or dinner with friends of the University throughout our travels. Anyone interested in taking part in this year’s ride is encouraged to contact us early to make accommodations as area hotels fill quickly in the summertime. Stay tuned for updates every few weeks.
