Alfred University Visiting Assistant Professor of Theater Rachel Lynett Spurger’s play Apologies to Lorraine Hansberry (You too August Wilson) will have its world premiere production this May with the Fonesca Theatre, in Indianapolis, IN, opening May 7 and running through May 23.
Referencing two honored Black playwrights, the play is set in the aftermath of a second Civil War, in Bronx Bay, an all-Black state and neighborhood has been founded as a utopia to protect Blackness. Defining “Blackness” in the utopia isn't easy, and Spurger explores such identities and ensuing questions and complexities as the play develops.
Apologies to Lorraine Hansberry (You too August Wilson) has been previously workshopped at Mirrorbox Theatre, Orlando Shakespeare Theatre, and Magic Theatre.
Spurger grew up in Los Angeles, went to school in Indiana, then worked and taught in Arkansas before moving to Madison, WI. She is the other of many plays, including Good Bad People, Well Intentioned White People and Abortion Road Trip.
