Alfred University summer camps growing

ALFRED, NY – Alfred University will offer an expanded range of summer programs, highlighting the depth and variety of the University’s academic and athletic resources. The programs are designed for students primarily in their high school years, although some of the athletic programs are geared toward a broader age group

Online academic classes will range from creative writing to 3-D printing (also known as additive manufacturing), from introductory glass engineering to Hip Hop dance and culture, from music and gaming to photography and sculpture.

In addition, the University will host seven on-campus sports camps for youth interested in honing their skills in basketball, football, lacrosse, swimming, tennis, volleyball and soccer.

Lauren Lake, dean of the University’s School of Art and Design, notes many of the new programs are offered by SOAD faculty and graduate students. Classes in art practice may be particularly valuable for high school students whose schools have struggled through the COVID-19 pandemic.

“These programs are a testament to how we’ve all been able to adjust to the pandemic and continue offering opportunities to students in, through, and of the arts,” Lake said. “For us to be able to offer this expanded curriculum to high school students is a testament to our outside-of-ordinary thinking.”

Susan Morehouse, Interim Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and director of the Creative Writing Institute for high school students, describes the Institute as an opportunity for like-minded students to gather from across the country, write and share their creative work, and discuss work by well-known writers.

She and Juliana Gray, Professor of English, teach, write, and discuss creative writing side by side with their students during the four days of the Institute. “For Juliana and me, the summer institute is an opportunity for some of our favorite teaching. Our students are amazing, and they produce some really great writing.”
