Students, clubs, recognized at Student Leadership Dinner

ALFRED, NY – Several Alfred University students, clubs and organizations were recognized for outstanding contributions to the campus at the annual spring Student Leadership Dinner, held virtually on April 28.  Participants were treated to a brown bag lunch of Mediterranean fare prepared by AVI food service.

Students in attendance included presidents and student leaders of the clubs and organizations on campus, team captains of our athletic teams, resident directors and resident assistants, Women’s Leadership Academy participants from 2020, the two Marlin Miller Outstanding Senior Award winners—Holly Passetti and Aanu Adeloye—and nominees, Student Senate incoming and outgoing E-Board, and Supplemental Instruction Leaders.

John Lewis, Director for Student Activities, was the master of ceremonies and he started the event off with a year in review. Lewis noted that as of the date of the dinner, 394 activities had been programmed during the academic year through the AU Connect system.

Keynote speaker for the event was Bronte Burleigh-Jones, vice president for Finance and Administration at Dickinson College, who gave a talk titled “Preparing to Lead a Meaningful Dash.” In her role at Dickinson, Burleigh-Jones oversees all areas of finance and campus operations, including Facilities Management, Dining Services, Human Resource Services, Financial Operations, Conferences and Special Events, Bookstore, Mail Center and Children's Center.

Carson Grover, president of Student Senate, presented awards in the following areas:

• Best Collaborator: Sister Circle, for hosting guest speakers, as well as bringing awareness to the racial issues.
• Best Use of Senate Funds: Saxon Racing for being a great example of utilizing the new funds request system, and for organization of requests. They also used funds often for continued club membership involvement for first years.
• Best Campus-wide Event: SAB for continued great work with Powell Takeover and Bingo events.

Kimberly Guyer, vice president for Student Affairs, and Tamara Kenney, dean of Student Wellbeing, presented the Saxon Six Student Leadership Awards to the following students: Charles McAllister, Esther Boateng, Bradley Keough, Ian King, Leo Pamphile, Erin Congdon, and Megan Jones. The Saxon Six award honors students who exemplify Saxon spirit and ideals.
