The Washington Post Monday published an op-ed by Alfred University Assistant Professor of History Mallory Szymanski describing the historical evolution of spring cleaning from its 18th century roots in New England to the current post-COVID wave of sprucing of homes after a winter, and year, of social distancing.

In spite of more than 200 years of technological innovation – and the various social forces unleashed by the women’s rights movement – Szymanski observes the responsibilities of annual spring cleaning continue to fall principally on women.

The op-ed, titled "Will rituals of spring cleaning survive the coronavirus pandemic?," was published June 7.
