ALFRED, NY — The Princeton Review on Tuesday, Aug. 31, released its 2022 Best 387 Colleges and, for the 30th straight year, Alfred University appears on the list. Alfred University—one of 41 colleges and universities in New York State recognized—has been honored by the Princeton Review each year since the publication released its first Best Colleges list in 1992.

Princeton Review publishes the Best Colleges list each year, using data from more than 2,000 colleges and universities nationwide. School selected for the list represent just 14 percent of all four-year colleges and universities in the country. The publication said it selects honored institutions based on “our high opinion of their academics.” Other factors it takes into account include admissions, tuition and financial aid, student body, campus life, and job placement/careers.

In addition to using hard data to formulate its list, the Princeton Review takes into account testimonials from students. Surveyed students from Alfred University said there are a “variety of academic opportunities” and “it’s easy to take subjects outside of your major.” A surveyed art student pointed to Alfred offering “other majors versus a traditional art (school) setting. If I had decided to change majors, Alfred has almost every opportunity.”

Other students pointed to Alfred’s “outstanding, talented and dedicated faculty” who “are always pushing you to reach your full potential” and are “always willing to put time into student independent projects.” Students also rave about the small classes sizes. “It is the closest to one-on-one teaching you can get,” a clinical and counseling psychology major noted, and “the classroom size is perfect for a more personalized education.”

The recognition from Princeton Review follows Alfred University being cited in the 2021 Washington Monthly rankings. In that report, Alfred ranked 102nd out of 616 in the list of Top Master’s Universities. Alfred University was also one of just 204 colleges and universities in the country to be named to Washington Monthly’s 2021 America’s Best Colleges for Student Voting list, which list recognizes institutions for promoting student voting and civic engagement.
