Alfred University Professor of History Gary Ostrower '61 will deliver the Nov. 4 Bergren Forum, New Information about World War II. The lecture will begin at 12:10 pm on the Zoom platform.
Ostrower will discuss (and correct) common misconceptions about World War II, including new scholarship challenging the common belief that atomic bombs caused the surrender of Japan.
Ostrower received his BA in 1961 from Alfred University where he studied under David M. Leach, a specialist in U.S. intellectual and diplomatic history. He then attended the University of Rochester where he received an MA in history (1962) and a PhD in history (1970). He has taught at Alfred University since 1969 and served as the Joseph K. Kruson Distinguished Professor.
A widely published scholar, Ostrower’s books include: Collective Insecurity: The United States and the League of Nations during the Early Thirties (1979); The League of Nations: from 1919 to 1929 (1996); and The United Nations and the United States, 1940-1998 (1998).
The Bergren Forum, sponsored by the Division of Human Studies, is held at 12:10 p.m. each Thursday. It is being offered virtually via Zoom and will return to an in-person format once the university considers this sufficiently safe. The Zoom links can be obtained by e-mailing Marilyn Saxton.
