Geology professor Alena Giesche to present in Environmental Speakers Series

Alena Giesche, visiting assistant professor of geology at Colby College, will present at next week’s Environmental Studies Speakers Series. The virtual presentation—titled “Tracking Snow Depth in Denali Park’s Wilderness: How Subarctic Climate is Changing”—is scheduled for 12:20 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19.


ALFRED, NY – Alena Giesche, visiting assistant professor of geology at Colby College, will present at next week’s Environmental Studies Speakers Series. The virtual presentation—titled “Tracking Snow Depth in Denali Park’s Wilderness: How Subarctic Climate is Changing”—is scheduled for 12:20 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19.

The presenters in the Fall 2021 semester Environmental Studies Speakers Series have a connection to Alfred University or the Alfred area. Giesche grew up in Alfred and is the daughter of Alfred residents Herbert and Marcela Giesche. Herbert Giesche is associate professor of ceramic engineering and materials science in Alfred University’s Inamori School of Engineering.

Alena Giesche has a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies and dance from Middlebury College in 2011; a M.S. degree in climate science from Universität Bern in Switzerland in 2014; and a PhD in geological and earth sciences/geosciences from the University of Cambridge in England in 2020. After spending a winter working in Denali National Park Alaska, she started in her role as visiting assistant professor of geology at Colby College.
