Members of the faculty in Alfred University’s College of Business prepared and served a bounty of delicious food to students Thursday evening. The holiday meal, held on the last Thursday before finals week, is part of a tradition that began seven years ago.
“It is our way of giving back and showing appreciation to our students,” said Mark Lewis, dean of the College of Business.
Lewis estimates about 75 students attended the Thursday event; past years had as many as 125. “We invite students in all our business classes, but don't turn anyone away who shows up and is not a business student.”
Faculty prepare a dish of their choice and serve it to students. Jason Morrison, assistant professor of finance, made a Cajun crawfish boil; Diana Maguire, associate professor of management, made macaroni and cheese; Theresa Gunn, associate professor of accountancy, made salt potatoes; Sangjoon Lee, professor of economics, made spicy Korean dip with celery and crackers; Fred Farley, assistant professor of management, prepared pulled pork and pulled chicken; and Lewis made Deer Camp (venison) Stew and vegan vegetable soup. Others provided baked goods and fresh vegetables.
Organization of the annual event is a service project of the Marketing Club. Lewis said the dinner is popular with students and faculty alike. “It is a lot of work to cook, set up, serve, and clean up, but we believe it is well worth the effort. It is part of our family atmosphere.”
