Art Scholar Jenni Sorkin to deliver lecture: 'Doing Inclusive and Revisionist Ceramic History'

Alfred University will host a lecture by art scholar Jenni Sorkin, Associate Professor of History of Art and Architecture at the University of California, Santa Barbara, at 5pm Jan. 27 on the Zoom platform. 

The lecture, “Doing Inclusive and Revisionist Ceramic History,” is sponsored by: the Dean’s office of Alfred University’s School of Art and Design + Performing Arts Division the Alfred Ceramic Art Museum; the Division of Ceramic Art the Division of Art History, and Alfred University’s Women's and Gender Studies program.

Sorkin studies the intersections of gender, material culture, and contemporary art, working primarily on women artists and underrepresented media. Her books include: Live Form: Women, Ceramics and Community (University of Chicago Press, 2016), Revolution in the Making: Abstract Sculpture by Women Artists, 1947–2016 (Skira, 2016), and Art in California (World of Art series, Thames & Hudson, 2021), as well as numerous essays in journals and exhibition catalogs.

She was educated at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Bard College, and received her PhD from Yale University. She is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Modern Craft.
