Bergren Forum begins with lecture on glass history, coinciding with 2022 International Year of Glass

Doris Möncke, Alfred University Associate Professor of Glass Science and Engineering, will deliver the Jan. 27 Bergren Forum, “The History of Glass and Technology.”

Doris Möncke, Alfred University Associate Professor of Glass Science and Engineering, will deliver the Jan. 27 Bergren Forum, “The History of Glass and Technology.” The weekly lecture series is held at 12:10 pm Thursdays and is currently carried on the Zoom platform.

2022 has been designated by the United Nations as The International Year of Glass, Möncke notes. “I want to look at the very beginnings of glass making and the technological advances that allowed glasses to become the beautiful and affordable commodity they are today.”

She adds: “The fundamentals of today's Glass Age reach back to ancient Mesopotamia. Glass technology blossomed in the Golden Ages of the Egyptian and Roman Empires. Glass Science evolved much later and only a brief overview can be given of how medieval forest glass workshops turned into the glass manufactures of the modern era and finally gave rise to new glass types and applications."
