Alfred University’s Cohen Gallery will host a reception and exhibition of work by Assistant Professor of Sculpture Joann Quiñones, titled Nuyorican, from March 3 – April 30. The opening reception will begin at 6 pm Thursday, March 3.

The term “Nuyorican” refers to the migration, or diaspora, of Puerto Ricans during the 1950s and 1960s to the United States. Originally meant as an insult, the expression was reclaimed by a generation of artists, poets, and social activists living in New York as a way of addressing the intricacies of a new, hybrid identity.

In this show, Joann Quiñones pairs poetry by Nuyorican poets with their own mixed media works to highlight a queer, Afro-Latinx identity.
