Fei Jun '05 M.F.A. (electronic integrated arts), creative director for the collective ART+TECH, recently produced an immersive video work for Lunar New Year that has been viewed by millions across Asia.

The immersive video work Traveling the Countryside, produced by the ART + TECH Collective, shocked Beijing and Taiwan during the Spring Festival Gala. The work appeared on the screen, creating a unique visual experience accompanying the song "Mountains and Rivers Are Safe in My Chest," through digital technology and spatial interpretation methods, as well as the aesthetic interpretative methods of dynamic narrative that highlighted the charm of national treasures.

Description of the work:

In the immersive CAVE cinema, a three-dimensional virtual landscape world gradually emerges under Wang Ximeng's brush. This is a digital twin of thousands of miles of rivers and mountains. Walking through it, viewers encounter water pavilions and grass huts hidden in the mountains. We have conversations with fishermen, villagers and birds. Modern technology has brought us into this dream of emptiness, from the mountains to the world, from the prehistoric universe to the depths of our hearts, with a surreal natural drama interpreting the oriental view of landscape. A void wandering in a thousand miles of rivers and mountains is about to start.

The image opens in a dark night, like the beginning of the vast universe. In the cosmic starry sky, the outline of "A Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains" gradually emerged. The undercurrent of three-dimensional color blocks composed of countless tiny geometric bodies symbolizes the microscopic world of mineral pigments in "A Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains." The color of the color block is extracted from the eight colors in "A Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains," including representative azurite, stone green, and ocher, stone yellow, clam powder, ink, etc. The painting is structured with eight colors, and the rich texture of the color itself is expressed through its rhythm, allowing the audience to return to the beginning of artistic creation, creating an artistic conception with painting, and giving the audience a sense of "painting tour."

The exhibition site of "Super Perspective: Technology + Art Exhibition" in Qingdao in 2021 "A Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains," which integrates the north and south landscapes, is the pinnacle of Chinese green landscape painting. A collective team produced a large-scale immersive digital artwork, "Yunyou Jiangshan," based on the national treasure-level cultural relic painting "A Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains," currently in the Palace Museum. During the creation process, the team first created a physical model based on "A Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains," and carried out digital 3D scanning to present a visual fusion of digital and real texture. It uses digital technology to innovate and interpret traditional Chinese culture, and paints a shocking audio-visual immersive oriental aesthetic mood with the majestic and magnificent colors of digital thousands of miles of rivers and mountains.

The immersive video work "Jiangshan" is an artistic dialogue across time and space with "A Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains," and it is also a digital contemporary translation of this masterpiece. From interpreting the complex drawing process of the original paintings, to creating an immersive experience of traveling in the world in the paintings, to extracting the aesthetic elements in the paintings and abstractly interpreting the mysteries of color and light and shadow.

In the simple sense, the work does not use a digital method to transfer this title, but it is a second creation. The abstract and mysterious light and shadow particles and lines gradually outline the outline of the landscape, and the flowing light and shadow and curves are further transformed and disassembled to form countless tiny geometric bodies, presenting a microscopic world that is infinitely magnified after entering the interior of the mineral pigments. With the gradual change of video content, the work has formed a multi-dimensional interpretation of "A Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains" from a macro perspective to an immersive perspective, and then to a micro perspective, conveying traditional Chinese aesthetics and cosmology with a grand and shocking visual narrative.
