The International Year of Glass will be celebrated Friday, April 22, in Hornell, when the Hornell Public Library hosts a reception and exhibition of glass art submitted by Alfred University students and faculty. The event will include a raffle for a glass vase donated to the Library by Angus Powers, Professor of Glass at Alfred University.

The event has been spearheaded by Denise Chilson, Library Director, who has also served as librarian at Alfred University’s Herrick Library and Scholes Library. Chilson says the Hornell Public Library is pleased to honor Alfred University’s culture of glass art and the declaration by the United Nations recognizing 2022 as the International Year of Glass.

Glass art currently rests on shelves and tables around the library which is open Monday-Thursday from noon to 7 pm; Friday from 1 to 5 pm, and Saturday from 9 am to noon.

Many of the pieces have been submitted by students in Alfred University’s School of Art Design, including work by Emilia Smith, Isabella Dorozynski, and Lauren Dembski. Chilson says several pieces will be available for sale at the April 22 reception, along with Powers’ glass vase which is available only through the raffle. Tickets will be available at the library, and the drawing will be held during Friday’s reception.
