Vernon Burdick ’61, ’65 M.S., emeritus professor of ceramic engineering, passes away

Alfred University alumnus Vernon Burdick ’61, ’65 M.S., emeritus professor of ceramic engineering, passed away Sunday, April 3, at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester following a brief illness. He was 83.


Alfred University alumnus Vernon Burdick ’61, ’65 M.S., emeritus professor of ceramic engineering, passed away Sunday, April 3, at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester following a brief illness. He was 83.

Burdick was revered as an outstanding educator and leader of Alfred University’s programs in ceramic engineering and materials science programs.

“Verne was a model of probity as well as being an outstanding teacher,” said Professor Emeritus Alistair Cormack, former dean of the Inamori School of Engineering. “He was one of my Alfred mentors who taught me the difference between engineering and science.”

Burdick earned a bachelor’s degree in ceramic engineering from Alfred University in 1961 and went on to earn his master’s degree in ceramic engineering, also from Alfred University, in 1965. In 1967, he earned his Ph.D. in ceramic engineering from the University of Missouri at Rolla, and that September was appointed assistant professor of ceramic engineering in the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. He retired as a full professor in November 1997.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sharon, and four daughters.
