ALFRED, NY – Alfred University will host a month-long celebration of art this summer, combining a showcase festival with the educational components of art workshops, institutes, and credit-bearing coursework, along with a residency program for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) artists.

“Alfred Summer Arts: Making Meaning in an Uncertain World” is scheduled for June 26-July 22. Featuring a range of one-week intensives—ranging from indigo dying, painting, and printmaking, to hip-hop, somatic movement, and podcasting—the event offers something for anyone in search of a firsthand creative experience.

“We are excited to open our doors and village this summer for participants from all over the world to engage in and through a range of materials & methodologies in the summer workshop offerings which reflect the mission of Alfred University’s arts and design programs,” said Lauren Lake, dean of the School of Art and Design at Alfred University.

Weeklong summer arts workshops—designed for participants including artists, teachers, community members, and visiting professionals—will be offered in a variety of media over three sessions: June 26-July 1; July 3-8; and July 17-22. Workshops include printmaking, dance, music, figure painting, plein air painting, natural dyes, paper making, community arts, artist writing and ceramic science.

The School of Art and Design and Performing Arts Division offer a select number of grants to Alfred University students, alumni, and faculty to subsidize summer arts workshop fees. Please follow this link to apply for a fee grant; the application deadline is June 1. Grant recipients will be contacted with a unique code when enrolling in the workshop. The Alfred Summer Arts Festival—an immersive five-day celebration designed to embrace the creativity of the community in collaboration with local and international visiting artists—will be held July 10-16. Participants will enjoy locally catered meals and participate in workshops hosted by an ensemble of world-renowned artists. In the evenings, patrons can gather to watch site-specific performances, installations, and participatory projects.

Others arts programming on campus include:

        · A variety of summer camps and institutes, including those focusing on Creative Writing (June 26-30) and Art Portfolio Preparation (July 17-22).

         · The BIPOC Artist-in-Residence program provides artists with opportunities to dive deeply into their artistic research and practice, and creative endeavors. The goal of the residency is to provide a cross-cultural destination at Alfred University for early-career BIPOC artists to enhance social/racial justice or combat structures of white supremacy. This will serve artists who have historically been underserved and remove systematic barriers. The second of two residencies, from July 18 to Aug. 13, will begin during the Alfred Summer Arts Program. The first residency began May 16 with artists Tatiana Florival and Clare Hu. Artists Adrian Aguilera and Jacoub Reyes will join in July.
