IEA receives major grant from New York State Council on the Arts
Alfred University’s Institute for Electronic Arts (IEA) recently received a $15,750 Immersive Art and Technology Initiative Grant from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), IEA Director Joseph Scheer, Professor of Printmaking in the School of Art and Design, announced this week.

Scheer said the NYSCA grant will support IEA “as a new regional educational art and technology hub for technologies that are not readily available in our part of New York State.”
Specifically, the grant will support a two-week IEA workshop and symposium that draws members of Western New York’s art organizations to the Alfred University campus. “The symposium will disseminate results of the workshop, discuss the development of strategies for exhibiting this type of work, and foster future collaborations among our organizations in the region,” Scheer said.
Following the workshops and symposium, IEA will partner with entities including: Rochester Contemporary Art Center; Squeaky Wheel Film and Media Arts Center; the CEPA Gallery; and the Burchfield Penny Arts Center, the latter three all located in Buffalo. Scheer said IEA already has been developing new studios in immersive technology; this initiative will enable the leveraging of the existing infrastructure and provide the creation of a new portable system to facilitate the off-siting of future workshops.
IEA’s workshop and symposium will be held late July and will be taught by Assistant Professor of Video Art Eric Souther and IEA Research Specialist Yunda Sun. It is designed for a hands-on approach for artists and art educators who do not have access to technologies available on the Alfred University campus. Such access will benefit the artists and the communities they engage and serve.
The symposium will invite representatives from the organizations listed above and members of the greater Alfred community. The offsite one-day workshops will be held in early August, in both Rochester and Buffalo.
IEA also may act as supporting partner in possible regional economic developments driven by new media arts.
