Students arrived on campus last week in preparation for the beginning of the 2022-23 academic year, the 187th at Alfred University. Approximately 385 first-years and 37 transfers stepped foot on campus for the first time as students during Welcome Week.

Friday, Aug. 26, was move-in day. Students, with the help of their families as well as the Saxon football team and Alfred University President Mark Zupan, brought their belongings into their residence hall rooms. Later in the day, students were treated to a cookout luncheon under a tent on The Brick residence hall lawn.

Also on Friday, students were introduced to an Alfred University tradition, taking the “Allen Walk” to Opening Convocation ceremonies in the Galanis Family Arena. Vice President for Student Experience Amy DeKay provided the keynote address, while Zupan and Student Senate President Natalie Reynolds also addressed those in attendance.

Friday evening, students attended “The People in Your Neighborhood,” a meeting in which they were introduced to members of the campus community who help them during their time at Alfred. Later that night, students could attend a comedy show in Holmes Auditorium.

Returning students checked into campus on Saturday. The day’s event featured hike/bike tours of campus; a tour of the libraries (which included games of mini golf); “chalk the walk” and lawn games outside The Brick; and, in the evening, the “Playfair” event in the Joyce Walton Center, an interactive party hosted by returning students.

Sunday’s activities included brunch at Ade Dining Hall; a visit to the Farmers Market at the village bandstand; a tour of the equestrian center; and a trip to Foster Lake.

Classes for the 2022-23 academic year began on Monday, Aug. 29.
