Alfred University professor Sundaram authors article for ACerS newsletter

An article by S.K. Sundaram, Inamori Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Alfred University, has been published in the American Ceramic Society (ACerS) newsletter, Ceramic Tech Today.

The article, “Be like glass,” was published in the Ceramic Tech Today online edition on Tuesday, November 8. It discusses the similarities between glass and water: both have a tetrahedral symmetry; the density of both decreases when cooled before critical temperature; their flow increases when exposed to pressure; and they possess analogous crystal structures.

The piece also outlines some differences between the two. For example, water is liquid at room temperature, while glass is a solid. Also, water freezes to form ice at 0 degrees Celsius; molten glass (silica) does not easily crystallize.
