New York State Council on the Arts honors Alfred University Associate Professor Eric Souther

Eric Souther ’11 (MFA), associate professor of Video Art at Alfred University, recently was honored by the New York State Council on the Arts for his project “Spiral of Deep Time,” which was selected for the NYSCA Individual Artist Grant in the Film, Media and New Technology category. The award is for NYSCA’s 2023 fiscal year.

Souther writes: “’Spirals of Deep Time’ explores the transformative shift away from the biblical 6,000-year age of the earth to the conception of deep time extended to billions of years, which was discovered in the birth of the young discipline of Geology in the 19th century. I am interested in exploring the psychological shifts of the people in transitional states of new thought and their implications and reverberations of deep time and long-term thinking today.”

Souther received his BFA from Kansas City Art Institute in 2009 and his MFA in Integrated Arts at Alfred University’s School of Art and Design in 2011. In addition to his appointment at Alfred University, he taught at Indiana University.
