Alfred University is partnering with Alfred State College to offer self-defense classes for women through the nationally-recognized Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) program. In photo above with three students are: Del Rey Honeycutt, director of counseling and mental health coach at Alfred State (kneeling, left); Shaun Fields (standing, center), Alfred University public safety office and certified R.A.D. instructor; and Matthew Whitney, officer with the Alfred State University Police Department.

The comprehensive course, offered only to women, is designed to empower participants with realistic self-defense tactics and techniques. R.A.D. is being offered free to students, staff, and faculty from Alfred University and Alfred State College. Alfred University has been offering the course for several years through its Public Safety office; this marks the first year the university has collaborated with Alfred State to offer the class.

A QR code is available from the Public Safety office that can be used to sign up for the course. The QR code, which is displayed on posters outside the Alfred University Public Safety office in Powell Campus Center, allows interested students, staff, and faculty to choose from a list of available dates and times to take the class. The number of classes offered each semester depends on the level of interest.

The classes typically last 10 to 12 hours and can be completed over two days.

For more information or to express interest in signing up, please contact Alfred University Public Safety at 607-871-2108, or email [email protected].
