ALFRED, NY – Stroll through Alfred, NY, Thursday, Dec. 20, during the Alfred Art Walk and view exhibitions in galleries and venues throughout the village.
Alfred Art Walk, which is free and open to the public, is held the third Thursday of each month. With many venues on the Alfred University and Alfred State College campuses closed for semester break, the December Art Walk will be a community focused event. Participating venues this month include:
The Alfred Ceramic Art Museum, Alfred University. One exhibition open that evening: “Reclaiming Splendor: Ceramic Design by Chunmao Huang,” featuring the First Lady of China’s Banquet Ware. Exhibition runs through Dec. 30.
There will be an Afternoon Tea held at the museum 4-5:30 p.m. as part of the December Art Walk. Visitors are invited to bring their favorite china tea cup and saucer and enjoy a cup of tea. Tea sandwiches, scones and pastries will be served. Event is free and open to the public.
Cohen Gallery, Alfred University, 55 N. Main Street. “Ikebana Ziggurat: Featuring Kathleen McShane and Ellen Bahr,” extended through Jan. 1, 2019 and open for Art Walk by appointment. The Cohen Gallery will host a special event, “Art Exploration! Art Makers Night,” from 5-8 p.m. at the gallery and Foundations Barn, as part of the December Art Walk.
The public is invited to join in a creative infusion of art and crafts, from ceramics to knitting to abstract art-making. Participants will have a chance to create holiday ornaments crafted from terra cotta clay, donated by Tufty Ceramic. Or, they can learn about “ikebana,” the Japanese art of flower arranging, and take home a creation inspired by the work in the “Ikebana Ziggurat” exhibition.
Gallery 2 Gifts of Distinction, 43 N Main Street, Alfred. Over 30 local artisans.
Terra Cotta Coffee House, 34 North Main Street. “Craig Prophet: In Studio and on the Road,” featuring work by the husband of Becky Prophet, Alfred Mayor and Alfred University professor of theater. Exhibition runs Dec. 15 through Feb. 1, 2019; opening reception is Dec. 20, 5-8 p.m.
