ALFRED, NY – The Cohen Gallery, 55 N. Main St., will present an exhibition of ceramic art and drawings by Robin Caster Howard, beginning with a reception Thursday, Feb.13 from 5-8pm and remaining on view until March 1.

Robin Caster Howard was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1951, a descendent of Russian and Polish immigrants. She received her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art in 1984 and her MFA from the New York College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 1986.

For several years, while living in New York City, she developed a jewelry business, selling her hand-crafted work to museums and boutiques. In 1993, she began working at Alfred University, initially as an assistant to the then-director of the Ceramic Museum of Art and subsequently as Assistant Dean of the School of Art and Design, where she remained until her retirement in 2016. Since then, she has been working full-time in her Alfred studio. She and her husband, Ben Howard, Emeritus Professor of English at Alfred University, are residents of Alfred.

The rich textures, playful colors and intuitive process in her work are at once fresh and skillful. “For years I have included images of birds and flowers in my work,” she says. “I have also explored the themes of death and loss. In the past few years, however, as the presence of an environmental crisis has become more immediate, the presence of nature—and the existential threat to nature as we know it—has become more prominent in my work.”

The Cohen Gallery exhibits the work of Alfred University alumni, faculty, and visiting artists and provides Alfred University students with hands-on experience in arts administration, community development, marketing and public relations, design, and management. Students assist in all facets of the exhibitions, from designing the space to preparing promotional materials and acting as docents during the shows.

The Cohen Gallery seeks to create opportunities for students, faculty, and alumni to engage in the professional activities of curating and organizing art exhibitions from the ground up, thus providing valuable experience in the business aspects of art. The Gallery also provides a supportive environment for exhibitions that serve regional constituencies, such as regional arts councils, public schools, and exchanges between regional art programs at the university level.

Cohen Gallery open hours: Tuesday – Friday 11am-5pm, Thursday till 7pm and weekend hours 12-4pm.
