ALFRED, NY – The Judson Leadership Center at Alfred University will host a screening of the film On the Basis of Sex on Saturday, March 21, at 6 p.m. in Nevins Theater, Powell Campus Center. This is the second in a series of three films being shown in celebration of Women’s History Month.

On the Basis of Sex is about U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg and her fight for gender equality — in society in general, and specifically in the court system. The movie, released in 2018, is directed by Mimi Leder. After the screening, Dr. Niki Tulk, assistant professor of theater at Alfred University, will lead a discussion on the film.

The third and final film in the series, Cloudburst, will be shown Saturday, March 28, at 7 p.m. in Nevins Theater. The movie, released in 2012 and directed by Thom Fitzgerald, is about an elderly lesbian couple trying to get to Canada to get married before one of the women is admitted to a retirement home. During their trip, the couple becomes unlikely friends with a hitchhiker who helps them on their journey.

The Judson Leadership Center is partnering with Spectrum, Alfred University’s LGBTQ+ club, to show Cloudburst. (The film was originally scheduled to be shown Friday, March 27, but the date was changed to March 28.)

The first film in the series celebrating Women’s History Month, Marianne Noires (or, The Black Mariannes), was shown Feb. 27. The film, released in 2016 and directed by Mame-Fatou Niang and Kaytie Nielson, is about a group of seven black women who were born in France. During their time in France, they band together to fight white nationalism, working to change the current climate of French society.

“Women’s History Month is the perfect time to celebrate women leaders from across the globe,” commented Shannon Marlatt, graduate assistant in the Judson Leadership Center, who helped organize the movie series. “Our movie series aims to celebrate intersectional women leaders; however, don’t forget to celebrate women all year long, not just during March!”

Admission to the films in the movie series is free.
