ALFRED, NY - Each Spring, art enthusiasts are drawn to the Alfred University campus for the thesis exhibitions in the School of Arts and Design. The Master of Fine Arts exhibitions, and the Bachelor of Fine Arts exhibitions (known as the "Senior Shows), provide a campus-wide showcase of the capstone work of a talented group of seniors and graduate students.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s exhibitions have been moved to an online setting. Artwork made for the exhibitions has been finished to the degree possible, photographed and presented on a dedicated website. The virtual Senior Shows and M.F.A. exhibitions will include links for each artist, which will display images of their work, descriptions of each piece, and an artist statement.
The virtual B.F.A. Senior Shows open Saturday, May 9. A link to the virtual M.F.A exhibitions, which open Friday, May 15, will be made available next week.
The images displayed in the exhibitions represent the culmination of these students’ intensive training and study in studio art practices. Despite unprecedented circumstances-never before had students been unable to complete their thesis work in studio-these students are realizing their degree exhibitions and the University is honored to share their efforts.
While the students are disappointed their thesis work cannot be displayed and viewed in a gallery setting this spring, the University hopes the M.F.A and Senior Show exhibitions can take place in its galleries late this coming fall. After exhibitions return to an on-campus gallery setting, the School of Art and Design plans to continue also offering virtual B.F.A. and M.F.A. exhibitions, which will make the artwork accessible to a wider audience.
Thesis season at Alfred University is beloved, and is a major attraction for art lovers, who are drawn to Alfred for the opportunity to see work by some of the country’s most promising young artists. The showcase of work by the candidates for the B.F.A degree from the School of Art and Design represents a diverse number of mediums and genres, including ceramics, painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, video, sonic arts, interactive media, interactive graphic design, and drawing. Candidates for Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degrees in Ceramic Art, Sculpture and Dimensional Studies, Painting and Electronic Integrated Arts are also represented in exhibitions.
