Dr. Furlong Joined the Faculty in 1983.
She served as the Chairperson of the Psychology Division from 1993 to 1996, 2000 to 2008, and 2010 to 2013. She has served on numerous committees, including the Alfred University Reaccreditation Self-Study Steering Committee, the Promotion and Tenure Committee, the Faculty Council of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, and the University Faculty Senate. She served as the Associate Dean for the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences from 2003-2009.
She is a member of four national honor societies: Psi Chi, Omicron Delta Kappa, Alpha Lambda Delta, and Phi Kappa Phi. Her memberships in professional organizations include: Society for Research in Child Development, American Psychological Society, the Cognitive Development Society, the Jean Piaget Society, Division 2 (Teaching of Psychology) of the American Psychological Association, and the International Society for the Study of Behavioural Development.
Dr. Furlong won Excellence in Teaching Awards in 2004, 2006 and 2015 and was the primary author of a textbook entitled Research Methods and Statistics: An Integrated Approach (Harcourt-Brace, 2000). She also created the instructor's manual and a student's study guide to accompany this textbook.
She was awarded three "Alfies" for Faculty Contribution to Campus Life, received the 1999 Omicron Delta Kappa Faculty Leadership Award, and Alfred Community's Spirit of Service Award in 2011.

Dr. Furlong is a member of the A. E. Crandall Hook & Ladder Company, Alfred's volunteer Fire and Ambulance Company. She joined the company in 1988, and served as Chief from 1993 to 2000. She has served as the 1st Assistant Chief since 2005. She is certified as an EMT-CC (Critical Care Technician) in New York State.
She has been a singer with the University Chorus (almost continuously) since 1984, and is a founding member of the Alfred Volunteer Choir Company.
