Dr. Becky Prophet has spent nearly four decades teaching and working in theatre. Before her return to Alfred, she acted, directed, and taught in Massachusetts, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Atlanta. A passionate teacher, she finds the relationships among Acting, Directing, Theatre History and all areas of human study intellectually alluring and deeply engaging.  Theatre celebrates life, challenges behavior and conceptions, and satisfies the soul, all at once.  Building courses and productions on foundations of expression of the human spirit, Becky leads students to investigate in all areas of theatre and many areas of the liberal arts to find truth and promote change.

Becky Prophet honors and works in all styles of theatre, but gives preference to theatre that presses for social and political change; she is an expert in the theatre of Bertolt Brecht. Directing plays which challenge students and audiences, while pushing the definition of theatre, take Becky’s artistic focus. With every production, Becky Prophet aims to guide actors and designers to artistic growth and powerful ensemble, providing all members with opportunities and challenges they have never had before. For Becky and people who work with her, every endeavor must be challenging, engaging, and, ultimately, as much fun as it is productive.  As You Like It, devised theatre projects, and work in new plays express the range of Becky’s work.  Dr. Prophet’s most recent work off campus centers on the development of new plays and playwrights.

Highly active in the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival and Association for Theatre in Higher Education, Becky Prophet has created an intensive directing institute for students, presents workshops and papers, and directs new plays at every conference.  Becky Prophet also believes that service to the communities that surround us is paramount to aiding the success for all peoples.
