Alfred University seniors are prepared to begin the next phase in their lives with graduate school or starting their careers thanks to their journey at Alfred. Here’s a glimpse of some of our extraordinary seniors from the Class of 2019.

Dillon Smith

Dillon Smith | Pine Bush, NY

Major: Criminal Justice & Psychology
Minor: Public Law & Sociology

“I chose Alfred University because of the personal interaction I had with the faculty and staff. I knew when I visited the school that the professors would really care about my success. They get to know you personally and teach with such a passion. After graduation, I will be continuing my studies at Alfred University in the College of Student Development masters program. I have received the first graduate assistantship in military affairs that will allow me to work with and support any veterans, dependents and ROTC cadets attending AU."

Nurila Kambar

Nurila Kambar | Almaty, Kazakhstan

Major: Materials Science & Engineering
Minor: Physics

“I selected Alfred University because of the excellent Materials Science & Engineering program. The moment I received my acceptance letter, I felt a personal connection with the University community. I was looking for a small sized university where I could pursue my goals by conducting research with faculty and have access to high tech lab equipment. I will be pursuing a PhD in Materials Science & Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign after graduation."

Clare Mattilio

Clare Mattilio | Lancaster, PA

Major: Fine Arts with a focus in Ceramics

“I chose Alfred University because I wanted to study art and ceramics in a place that would allow and encourage experimentation and new ways of thinking. There are so many opportunities to learn in the amazing facilities in the School of Art & Design. There is also so much knowledge accessible through our faculty, staff and libraries. After Commencement I plan to continue with my art and find a studio or artist in residence program where I can do that."

Elizabeth Estep

Elizabeth Estep | Horseheads, NY

Major: Biology
Minors: Chemistry & Spanish
Concentration: Pre-Health Sciences

“I came to Alfred University because of the University's commitment to helping students become truly well-rounded contributors to society. It allowed me to be involved in a variety of capacities on campus while also succeeding in my academics. I knew Alfred was the right place for me 4 years ago during an Accepted Student Day, and never once looked back. Starting in August, I will begin my next academic journey at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine."

Tiffany Gannon

Tiffany Ann Gannon | Doylestown, PA

Major: Fine Arts

“Alfred University is the best ceramics college in the country! However, my path was redirected which ultimately showed me the true magic of everything Alfred University has to offer and led me to my decision to pick up a Business Administration 4+1 minor and learn three other artistic mediums. This summer I will be doing a sales and marketing internship in Syracuse. I will be returning to Alfred in the fall to complete my MBA degree by May 2020."

Gabrielle Warren

Gabrielle Warren | South Deerfield, MA

Major: Psychology
Minors: Equine Studies

“I came to Alfred University because of the close knit community, wonderful professors, beautiful campus and large equestrian program. I will be working this summer at a ranch as a wrangler and then I hope to be working in a school system. I plan to get my masters in School Psychology some day!"

Greg Lastrapes Greg Lastrapes | Austin, TX

Major: Art History & Theory and BFA Studio Glass & Ceramics

“I chose Alfred University because it offers a unique opportunity to study ceramic and glass art in a program that has been committed to understanding the materials we use since it was founded. The New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University remains one of the last bastions of academic craft art studies underpinned by material research and technical proficiency. This combination ensures that my peers and I have a comprehensive understanding of our work and a unique voice in our fields upon graduation. After graduation I plan to finish an internship at Studio Potter magazine. I have been working remotely as their Editorial and Administration intern since early February. I will be on site in Massachusetts for about a month before moving to pursue museum or gallery work."

Haley Ruffner

Haley Ruffner | Allegany, NY

Major: English

“I chose AU because of its equestrian teams, small and inclusive community and strong English department. My acceptance letter referenced parts of my application and addressed my personal interests, unlike the generic ones I received from other schools. From the moment I arrived on campus, people went out of their way to help me and encourage me. My immediate plans after commencement are to travel to London as part of the Literary London class. When I come back in early June, I will continue training my three-year old horse for a futurity competition in the fall in addition to doing freelance writing, editing and publishing work. In the fall, I have an opportunity to go to Colorado and work as a horse wrangler for my uncle's guided elk hunting businesses. After that, I will begin searching for a job in equine publications and looking at graduate schools."

Andrew Tran

Andrew Tran | Fort Wayne, IN

Major: Fine Arts

“I first heard about Alfred University in my hometown. My mom's friend, Cheryl Blanchard, told me to look into it. After a couple of visits, I knew this was the community I was looking for. After commencement I will stay the summer in Alfred to continue with my internship. I'll then move to Philadelphia for a post baccalaureate or a residency program. A few years down the line I will attend graduate school."

Rachel Pera

Rachel Pera | Kenmore, NY

Majors: Chemistry & Biology

"I was first drawn to Alfred University because of the small class sizes and beautiful campus. I decided to attend AU when I found out I would be able to take the classes I needed to prepare me for vet school alongside becoming a NCAA Division III athlete, performing my own research and participating in various clubs on campus. After graduation I will be furthering my studies at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine."
